This year, the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Not only has the gallery treated itself to a new modern website, a new logo, and a June exhibition in Smetana Park in Pilsen, but it is now also presenting another gift—a richly illustrated publication.
The book 70 / The Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen 1954–2024 does not aim to be a formal commemorative publication. Instead, it provides a concise summary of what visitors can experience at the gallery today, while also reflecting on its journey over the past seventy years. A natural emphasis is placed on the last fifteen years (or sixteen, including 2024), beginning with 2009—a pivotal year for the gallery—and concluding with 2024, marking the 70th anniversary of its official establishment.
Through eighteen chapters, the book guides readers through the gallery’s history, collections, exhibition program, key achievements, and awards. It also highlights its educational and cultural activities, acknowledges past directors, and details the challenging journey toward a new gallery building. Readers will gain insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of a gallery, discovering that it involves much more than just organizing exhibitions—it encompasses a diverse range of activities.
The book was officially launched at the Gala Evening celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, held at the end of October. The book’s patron is Professor Vít Vlnas, a long-time expert collaborator and supporter of the gallery.
The publication was co-authored by the gallery’s core staff members: Tomáš Hausner, Petr Jindra, Ondřej Kozibratka, and Roman Musil.
The book is available for purchase at the gallery’s exhibition halls, the visitor center of the Semler Residence, and the gallery’s online store.
