The book, authored by Petr Domanický and titled The Semler Residence: A Unique Interior by Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka in Pilsen, is now available in a print run of 4,000 copies and in three language versions. Thanks to its English and German editions, it will reach the shelves of major museums, galleries, and art bookshops worldwide. The Czech edition can be purchased at the ticket offices of the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, the Semler Residence visitor center, and the gallery’s online shop.
Petr Domanický’s research in the book is based on years of dedicated study. While his previous publication, The Semler Residence in Pilsen: A Three-Dimensional Story of Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka, was available only in Czech and primarily targeted an expert audience, this new book is more accessible to general readers, both Czech and international. It is richly illustrated with photographs and documents, offering an engaging narrative about the Semler family, the complex process of restoring the Semler Residence after it was acquired by the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, and, of course, the architects Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka. The primary focus is on the residential interior commissioned by Oskar and Jana Semler in 1933–1934, one of the most remarkable examples of its kind in Central Europe.
The book’s foreword was written by Professor Christopher Long from the University of Texas, a globally renowned expert on Adolf Loos' work.
This marks the fourth book published by the Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen in collaboration with the prestigious Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers. Partnering with Scala, which boasts a worldwide distribution network, is part of the gallery’s broader effort to introduce both Czech and international audiences to its most significant artworks—many of which remain hidden in storage due to the ongoing absence of a permanent exhibition space.
The first book in this collaboration, Director’s Choice, was published in 2019, showcasing 37 key pieces from the gallery’s collection. It was followed in 2022 by 50 Masterpieces od Czech Cubism from the Collections of The Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen, highlighting the second most significant collection of Cubist art in the Czech Republic. Last year saw the release of 550 Masterpieces of Czech Fin de Siècle Art from the Collections of The Gallery of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
These publications have garnered great interest from readers worldwide. They are available not only in bookstores across Europe but also in China, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Canada.
