Josef Šíma: Between (Two) Worlds

Exhibition hall Masné krámy
Author
Alena Pomajzlová
Curator
Petra Kočová

Josef Šíma (1891–1971) is one of the leading figures of modern art. His work has been widely examined both in the Czech Republic and internationally. The exhibition at the West Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen will focus on an as-yet missing deeper comparison—not only with his Parisian artistic contacts such as František Kupka, Piet Mondrian, Max Ernst, and Jean Arp but also with works by French poets he befriended, particularly Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes and Pierre Jean Jouve, whose imagination was comparable to Šíma’s unique paintings with their multi-layered meanings.
